DIVINE INTERVENTION @ Governor’s Island - Nolan Park
Divine Intervention : Stories of Love & Solidarity (August 18 - November 3, 2024) uplifts the work of cultural workers, organizers, and artists drawing together diverse stories of devotion to their communities during the COVID years (2020-present) in solidarity within global freedom struggles.
Through interdisciplinary research methods, this installation translates interview processes into applied textile, collage, photographic and video-based interpretations of daily rituals of care, commitment, and recovery that are rooted in anti-imperialism and decolonization. Utilizing plant matter as a means of connecting the spirit of nature with oral traditions, Divine Intervention considers that for many, the path towards freedom includes tapping into a variety of healing methods and practices that inform and assist in navigating life’s many twists and turns illustrating varying expressions of love and presence inviting the audience to reflect on how war, genocide, and freedom impact us all… More details coming soon.
WORD OF MOUTH : MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART DETROIT
Word of Mouth ( June 28 - October 4, 2024 ) Detroit , MI Join us on Friday, June 28, to celebrate our Summer 2024 Exhibitions. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. calls attention to the implicit processes and relationships that bring each work together, gesturing toward the underlying ecosystems that support and stimulate the individuals powering the art world through their knowledge, labor, and material expertise. By echoing these networks within its decentralized and peer-to-peer approach to curatorial decision-making, Word of Mouth plays with the formality of organizational structures and celebrates everyday acts of collectivity and exchange.
The exhibition continues the communal mission of Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead, a permanent public artwork located on the museum’s grounds. Kelley conceived it to host experiments deeply tied to community care.

RETURN TO THE LAND : MOTORHOUSE
Return to the Land ( August 24 - October 10, 2023 ) Guest curator and Baltimore based artist Jessy DeSantis (they/them) is curating a contemporary exhibition highlighting artists’ interpretive expression of their relationship with the Land. “Returning to the land is essentially returning to yourself because you are the land” states the curator. “Generations of separating ourselves from nature has led to our current lived experiences of this ecological emergency. For reversal, our way of human living would have to change drastically, it would need to be revolutionary. However unattainable that may feel, a manageable step towards that is of that internal revolution in returning to who we fundamentally are”.

A JOURNEY NOT SOON FORGOTTEN: ARLINGTON ARTS CENTER
A Journey Not Soon Forgotten explores the global impacts of migration. This exhibition follows the practices of nine artists who have either immigrated to the United States themselves or are the children of immigrants. The artwork on display showcases the physicality, spirituality, and conceptuality that is birthed through migration. Artists in this exhibition are working through ideas of lineage and labor while also examining political interests and significant historical events – domestic and abroad – that affect their self-identity and many of the people(s) they care about. A Journey Not Soon Forgotten features artists that share their personal experiences with migration in an effort to advocate for the interests of these global communities.
A Journey Not Soon Forgotten is curated by Thomas James, independent curator and Executive Director of the Last Resort Artist Retreat in Baltimore, MD. The exhibition includes work by nine artists: Jessica Elena Aquino (Brooklyn, NY), Antonius-Tin Bui & Theresa-Xuan Bui (Baltimore, MD and Chicago, IL ), Ainsley Burrows (Baltimore, MD), Lehna Huie (Baltimore, MD), Sam Husseini (Prince George’s County, MD), Thiang Uk (Baltimore, MD), Fahimeh Vahdat (Howard County, MD), You Wu (Baltimore, MD), and Helen Zughaib (Washington, DC).
QUARTAIR: BACK TO NORMAL
Back to Normal
We are excited to join forces in The Hague Contemporary Art Weekend with Back to Normal, an international collaborative exhibition & network event, initiated by the Alternative Art Guide and Artist-Run Network Europe (ARNE).
Back to Normal is loosely based on the recurring idea of "normality" after the pandemic, and more recently challenged by the emergence of the war. The exhibition runs from July 1st to 24th, involving twelve artistic initiatives: Quartair, Billytown, Hgtomi Rosa, Trixie, Artisterium, Flux Factory, U10, Sandwich Gallery, 16/16, C5cnm, MA Project, Uniarte.
Opening: Friday, 1 July, 2022 Exhibition hours: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 13:00 - 18:00 Until Sunday, 24 July, 2022
Special program: Fri, 1 July – Opening | Collective walk tour route | 19:00 (all locations) Quartair + Trixie + Billytown, Sat, 2 July – Interview, performance, survey and network meeting (at Billytown) 14:00 – 18:00
Sun, 3 July – Informal talks by the artists (by venue) 13:30 Trixie | 15:00 Quartair | 16:30 Billytown
Is an artist-run space only a presentation and production hub, or should we re-conceive what we are doing? Can we stop the regular pace of our activities and engage in self-reflection? Shouldn't we move forward rather than go 'back to normal'?
The Alternative Art Guide invited four artist-run spaces from The Hague to join this project: Hgtomi Rosa, Quartair, Trixie and Billytown. Each of them, in turn, paired with another artist-run space abroad, to form a collective of sorts and present 24 artists from the 12 initiatives. This exhibition is part of a larger program within The Hague Contemporary Art Weekend 2022.

REPERCUSSIONS: Redefining the Black Aesthetic
I am grateful to have participated in this show among some wonderful artists. Read more about the work below.
"More than 50 years removed from the 1960s ‘new abstraction’ movement, contemporary Black artists are creating abstract works that add new layers to what we consider fine art. This work is important to analyze as these artists tell new stories, inserting themselves into the conversations affecting the modern world."
—Thomas James, Exhibition Curator

“Material is magnificent and magnified in this show, and as a whole, the works beg you to come closer and to truly see them. They talk to each other, and rich conversations spring up between them, the gallery functioning as an interlocutor between ancestors, predecessors, and these artists.” - Teri Henderson

SHE PERFORMS : SPOTLIGHT LEHNA HUIE
For the second year in a row, the majority of art schools have opted not to stage graduate shows or open studios (Rundgänge in Germany) as a consequence of the ongoing global pandemic. These opportunities for both current and graduating students to showcase their work to the public, gallerists and other art world professionals are crucial as they embark on their careers as practising artists, which is why we decided to dedicate our summer to publishing this series of Spotlights featuring recent graduates from all over the world.
This week is the last in the series and we’re delighted to close it out with Lehna Huie, selected by our NYC Correspondent, Caroline Blockus.

I Have Never Felt Sorrow Without Reason
This project is a digital and handheld zine - that is a collection of visual stories on life as a Black woman artist, mother and student finding her voice in the time of COVID. It is centered on narratives of family, motherhood, intergenerational trauma and healing from grief. The project includes a resource segment for Black and Brown students navigating art school and art institutions . The project includes a resource segment for Black and Brown students navigating art school and art institutions .
It is accompanied by collaborative soundscapes and poetry featuring artist and professor Unique Robinson including key points with artist and professor Abigail DeVille on working with a mentor, research strategies, professional development, documentation and best studio practices. The collages explore psychological relationships between interior and exterior spaces in the home, the mind, the body and in larger geographies finding grounding in the midst of the loss and disorientation of these times. The series reflects on the experiences I have felt while recovering aspects of my cultural identity. It addresses the act of rejecting limiting definitions of Blackness in art, addressing displacement, distortion and power in these stories.
